Saltbox Brewery Closer To Reality

People in Mahone Bay could soon be sampling beer made in their own backyard.

Saltbox Brewing Company is in the final stages of securing a building for their brewery and taproom.

Co-founder Andrew Tanner says it’s happening faster than expected.

“When we started talking about this we all, I think for the most part, thought ‘oh well, maybe in a year, a year and a half or what have you, we might get this thing off the ground,’” he says. “So, it’s been great to move it along so quickly.”

A public hearing scheduled for tonight will determine if Saltbox can begin to develop the former “Eclectic Garage” antique store on Main Street.

Tanner says the space offers them a unique opportunity.

“There are two bays existing in the garage right now,” he says. “So, the right hand side will literally be where all the large brewing equipment will be stacked, and allow the public to come in and do brewery tours and see the brewing process and so on. Then the left bay will be what we’re referring to as the ‘tap room.’ So, an area where the public can certainly sit and chat.”

Tanner says once they get the building up and running they hope to branch out, exploring different types of beer and cider.

In the meantime, he says, if all goes well, they hope to be able to give the public a taste test by late May.
