School Board Requests DOTIR To Assess Pentz, Petite Riviere Schools

Major additions and alterations could be coming to one of the elementary schools in Pentz or Petite Riviere.

Education Minister Karen Casey said in a letter to the South Shore Regional School Board it could happen with approval by cabinet members.

But, the board says an assessment on both schools and their land is necessary before further steps are considered.

Superintendent Geoff Cainen says the board couldn’t fully accept the letter because boundaries would stay the same.

“We want to make sure that we look at things like best travel time for students, best opportunity for students and when you freeze those boundaries and take them out of the mix, the voice of those families has disappeared.”

The board requested the department of transportation and infrastructure renewal to conduct the assessment.

There have been two requests for a new facility since both elementary schools were targeted to close in 2013.
