The discussion around policing services in the Town of Shelburne has expanded to include two other municipal units.
Last night the towns of Shelburne and Lockeport and the Municipality of Shelburne met to discuss a shared concern.
The cost of policing by the RCMP.
Mayor Karen Mattatall says they met last last following a request from the local RCMP Advisory Board asking the councils to hold a joint meeting to explore options for policing as a shared service.
She admits the concept is unique and hasn’t been used in other jurisdictions.
“However, it is a good starting point. An eastern Shelburne County contract should, likely, treat all the residents, in terms of how they pay, much more fairly than the way the Town of Shelburne is paying now.”
Senior staff from each council will report back in the coming weeks.
Mayor Mattatall says a proposal from Bridgewater Police Services to take over from the RCMP in the Town of Shelburne is still on the table.
