Shelburne Planning Amalgamation, Annexation Meeting With Municipality, Lockeport

The Town of Shelburne is trying to push forward with shared services.

Council has voted in favour of talking with the Municipality of Shelburne and Town of Lockeport about amalgamation and annexation.

The municipality has favoured dissolution as the best option.

However, Mayor Karen Mattatall says they won’t be entertaining the idea.

“It was very clear that my council, the majority of them, do not want the town to talk about dissolution.”

Mattatall hopes the three units will hold a joint meeting with the department of municipal affairs.

Meanwhile, the mayor of Lockeport wants each municipal unit to move forward together.

The working relationship between the Town of Shelburne and municipality has declined over the last few months.

Darian Huskilson says he hopes they can come to an agreement.

“I’ve been aware of bullying on behalf of some members of different councils trying pushing their opinions on others. As long as it’s not that, then maybe it will turn into something that will benefit all residents.”

Huskilson says anything should be on the table to improve services for residents.

A meeting date has not yet been scheduled.
