Small Community Hit Hard By Fires

Fire has extensively damaged another home on Shelburne County’s Cape Sable Island.

Fire fighters were called to the house in South Side just before 6:30 Wednesday night.

Islands and Barrington Fire Chief Dwayne Hunt arrived just before the first trucks got there.

He tells Acadia News that “flames were rolling out of a living room window.”

Hunt says the occupants, two adults and two children were attending a Christmas concert at the time.

He says they lost everything.

“The man fire damage was in the kitchen and living room area. There was heavy smoke, heat and water damage to the rest of the house. I’m not sure it’s going to be salvageable.”

Chief Hunt says the cause appears to be electrical.

“From our investigation last night, it appears to have started in the area of an entertainment centre.”

Wood’s Harbour/Shag harbour and Barrington/Port Latour departments also responded.

He says his department has responded to a total of 12 calls in the past 23 days, 5 have been structure fires with one claiming a life.

Just three days ago, an elderly couple lost their home to fire.

They were at church at the time.

Last night’s house fire was the third that day.

“The volunteers are getting tired. Three-quarters of them are lobster fishermen. They don”t get much sleep.”
