South Shore Players Hoping To Use Former Bridgewater Arena as Performing Arts Centre

South Shore Players are hoping to turn the former Bridgewater Arena into a performance centre.

The group presented the idea recently to town council.

A proposed long-term plan would see South Shore Players use two-thirds of the main floor to include a large stage, seating area, dressing rooms and a lobby.

The remaining third of the arena would be sectioned off for use by the Bridgewater Farmer’s Market.

Mayor David Mitchell says they have been requested to pay $6,000 for a feasibility study

“Council right now has to decide do we have the money? Are we willing to spend the money? Is it all our money? Do we go for grants? Do we ask the South Shore Players or the Farmer’s Market to pitch in since it would benefit them?”

Mitchell says a feasibility study would be needed to make sure council has an informed decision.

“I’ve heard people say ‘it’s a great venue because of its location; its proximity to downtown; its empty space’ and I’ve heard others saying ‘there is no way to convert that into a place where the acoustics are good enough to have a performing arts centre.’ “

South Shore Players is hoping to have the new performance centre ready for the 2020 season.
