Great news for volunteer firefighters on the South Shore.
Nova Scotia’s finance minister has decided to keep the $500 tax credit for them and search and rescue volunteers.
A consultant recommended to remove the credit in a tax and regulatory review.
First Vice-President of the Fire Services Association, Jim Roper, feels the Liberals got the message.
He says, “The feedback they got they realized that the volunteer firefighter tax credit was a worthwhile piece of legislation that they should sustain, rather than try and remove that and take away something volunteer firefighters worked hard to get in 2007.”
Roper says volunteer firefighters face many challenges including time away from family.
He says they also have several demands including training, courses, meetings and fundraising.
Roughly 75 per cent of firefighters in Nova Scotia are volunteers.
