Ten months to go until the best female midget hockey teams from across Canada make the trek to the South Shore.
The 2018 Esso Cup is scheduled for April 22-28 at the Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre.
Members of the host committee visited Morden, Manitoba in April for this year’s national championship to see how the tournament was organized.
Chairperson Connie Martin says Manitoba had great fan and business support; something she hopes Lunenburg County can build on.
“There were able to have school programs there, brought the kids in which we plan to do as well. They asked the businesses ‘would you be willing to use your sign board to promote the Esso Cup or welcome fans?’ “
The 2018 Esso Cup in Lunenburg County will be the 10th annual event.
It will feature two teams from Atlantic Canada, and one from Quebec, Ontario, West and Pacific regions.
Martin says local female hockey players will benefit as well through a legacy program.
“It is a development of female hockey in the area, so it’s on-ice development and coaching clinics.”
Nineteen games will be played over the course of the tournament which was secured by Events Lunenburg County.
Martin says their slogan is ‘Seas The Moment’ to acknowledge hockey teams coming from coast to coast.
She says they will be looking for roughly 175 volunteers as the championship draws closer to its start date.
