Transgender Day Of Remembrance To Be Held In Lunenburg

Each year, a memorial is held to remember transgender people who have been lost to violence.

Traditionally, the Transgender Day of Remembrance is held on November 20.

Second Story Women’s Centre will mark the occasion Friday.

Leigh Heide runs the Youth Project Lunenburg drop-in at Second Story and works with the transgender youth who put the event together.

“They were great. Their ideas were really on the mark and I think the event will represent, you know a chance for them to say to the community too, who they are and what they need in terms of support.”

Heide says candles will be lit and names of those lost will be read aloud.

The event will also allow youth from throughout the region to interact and share their stories.

Heide says it’s important Second Story shows their support.

“Primarily those lost in North America in the last year were young trans-women of colour. So it’s really important that Second Story makes mark of this event.”

The ceremony begins at 7:30 Friday night at Second Story in Lunenburg.

The Youth Project meets bi-weekly at Second Story from 6:00-8:00pm.

Freeman House in Bridgewater also offers meetings for trans-youth every Thursday from 4:30-6:00pm.
