With a new Veterans Affairs Minister comes anticipation for currently serving and retired military members.
Seamus O’Reagan was sworn in last week replacing Kent Hehr who held the position since November 2015.
Kevin Clayton, the rep for the South Shore UN Nato Veterans Group, says he hopes the new minister will address issues with military pensions.
Clayton notes the Harper Conservatives changed lifelong pensions to lumpsome payments during their time in government.
“If they got $50 000.00 as a lumpsome payment for whatever that may be, as opposed to $1000/month that’s only a little over 4 years. Whereas if a guy lives the next 20 years, after the four years, he’s without,” says Clayton.
Clayton acknowledges the old minister reopened veterans affairs offices and is grateful for that.
He also hopes the new minister will help veterans transition easier into civillian life.
