VIDEO: First Homes Get Connected To Sweetland Internet Project

A step in the right direction for internet service in the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg.

At least a dozen homes have been connected to high speed internet in the Sweetland area.

The project has the capabilities to reach up to 288 residences and increase speeds from less than one megabyte per second to 15.

Mayor Carolyn Bolivar-Getson says the community came forward with the idea and it received help from the provincial government to the tune of a $75,000 grant.

“To enter into an agreement to where we are today and that is connecting residents to internet at a speed they can actually use from a business perspective, and from a school or leisure perspective.”

Bolivar-Getson says it’s good news and a win-win for everyone.

“I know there is many residents out there like myself who still have that wheel spinning round and round in the background as they try to connect, but this is step one and we recognize that there is much work to be done and it is our number one priority.”

Bolivar-Getson says the municipality has applied to the federal government’s Connect to Innovate program to try to bring high-speed internet to other communities.

Meanwhile, the first resident to receive high-speed internet under the Sweetland project says he’s gone from frustrated to amazed.

Anthony Organ says his service used to be terrible because it was difficult to access email or Facebook.

“Now when you click something and it opens it is amazing. I spend less time at the computer now because I get my stuff done.”

Organ says he’s able to use his Smart TV as advertised and his computer is fast enough to install the most recent copy of Windows.

He says having high speed internet has improved his life significantly.

Residents in the surrounding areas may be eligible for the new high-speed Internet service, and are encouraged to sign up at novascotiahighspeedinternet.com/Sweetland.
