Bridgewater: Mayor Frustrated With School Review Resuming

The mayor of Bridgewater says he’s frustrated the school review process will resume regardless of some findings in a consultant report.

Alphonse MacNeil concluded that policy and procedure was adhered to but noted there is a lack of trust in the school board within the community.

A majority of board members acknowledged the need to develop stronger relationships with people and local government.

The board has indicated they would like have a decision made on the Bridgewater and Park View families of schools before the October 15 election.

David Walker says he feels it is being rushed.

“Take the time that is needed, if that’s another six months or eight months, to build the trust between the board and the communities and then make the decision that’s in the best interest of the students and our residents.”

There has been no review of catchment areas, a new school for Pentz and Petite Riviere is up in the air and there is no plan in place for BHS if grades 10-12 move to Park View.

Walker says the board shouldn’t be hurrying a decision just because an election is coming.

“There is so many floating pieces out there, so many things that aren’t known. I just can’t imagine how they can make a decision before the election.”

The school board could consider adding more time for discussion during its first meeting, which is scheduled for 6:30 p.m Wednesday at Bridgewater Elementary School.
