Emotional Getson Reflects After Losing Memorial Cup Final

Keith Getson fought back tears as he was swarmed by half a dozen reporters following his final major junior hockey game.

The right side of his nose bloodied by a high stick during an incident in the second period.

And although there was no call, Getson is quick to dismiss any notion that he’s complaining because it’s not part of the fabric that makes up his game.

Anyone who has watched him for five seasons with the Charlottetown Islanders or Halifax Mooseheads will agree.

Getson came to Halifax in a December 22 trade from the Islanders in a dream come true for the Bridgewater native who used to make trips to the city to watch the likes of Jonathan Drouin or Nathan MacKinnon.

And though he and his teammates couldn’t quite find the same magic as the 2013 Mooseheads did in their Memorial Cup winning year, Getson says it was an amazing experience.

“I got traded here to try and win championships. We had two shots to do it and we went 0-2 but at the end of the day I’m going to remember this for the rest of my life.”

Four unanswered goals by the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies earned them their first Memorial Cup title in franchise history.

The Huskies defeated the host Mooseheads 4-2 in Sunday night’s championship game.

Getson played 401 games over five years, collecting 202 points throughout the regular season, playoffs and his lone Memorial Cup.

The third round pick of the Islanders in the 2014 draft says he’s he’s proud of what he’s accomplished.

“It goes by in the blink of an eye. It was an amazing five years and I just want to say thank you to all my teammates, all my coaches, trainers, equipment managers, everybody.”

Getson will take some time to decide next steps but is considering a future at Saint Mary’s University.
