Fire Sinks Fishing Vessel At Yarmouth Wharf

The 70-foot fishing vessel ‘Fundy Commander’ is a loss after fire broke out in the engine room last night.

Firefighters were called to Lobster Rock Wharf shortly after 10pm.

Yarmouth Fire Department Platoon Chief Peter Winship says weather conditions made it dangerous for firefighters.

“When we arrived on scene we had heavy smoke coming from the vents on the top of the deck. The winds was a contributing factor. That played a major part in us not coming to the conclusion that we expected or hoped.”

Winship says unfortunately the vessel has taken on so much water it can’t be refloated and is pretty much sunk where it is.

He says the cause of the fire hasn’t been determined.

Firefighters from Port Maitland, Lake Vaughn and Wedgeport were also called in last night.

Keith Laidlaw, Deputy Superintendent for Environmental Response with the Canadian Coast Guard says two response specialists were on route this afternoon.

Laidlaw says the owner of the vessel has been very active on this, and the boat is insured.

He says the owner has no intentions of rebuilding.

A containment boom will be placed around the vessel, and debris and pollution are being handled.

Laidlaw says Coast Guard staff will be on hand for a couple of days to make sure the owner is taking proper actions.

He says the owner will have a few days to put a salvage plan in place to raise the vessel and remove it from the water.
