A small volunteer group in Lunenburg county is looking to expand its services across the South Shore.
Helping Hands started in Mahone Bay and assists people in their homes or with errands in the community.
Director Ted Hobson says they’ve applied for a $ 1.2-million grant from the federal government.
He says it will help them tackle the problem of social isolation.
“It’s increasingly recognized as a determinant of health and well-being,” he says. “If we can get that going I think we’ll make major progress in addressing this in the South Shore.”
Hobson says something as simple as a drive to the doctor can help.
They hope to hear from the government by spring.
