NS Government Releases 2016-17 Capital, Five-Year Highway Plans

The Nova Scotia government has released its $645-million capital plan for 2016-17.

It includes $480-million for highways, buildings, schools, and hospitals.

The money supports ongoing upgrades at Park View Education Centre and dialysis unit designs for South Shore Regional Hospital.

Finance Minister Randy Delorey says the province is restricted in its spending.

“This year’s capital plan is a reflection on the fiscal reality in our province. It is becoming more and more challenging to invest in infrastructure and we need sustainable finances to allow the flexibility to do even more.”

There is money supporting the expansion of the emergency department and intensive care unit at South Shore Regional Hospital and health-care facility improvements in Shelburne.

The plan also contains 164.2-million dollars for the new Halifax Convention Centre, cost shared between the federal, provincial and municipal government.

The 2016-17 capital plan can be found at www.novascotia.ca/finance .

Meanwhile, the province has also released its updated five-year highway improvement plan.

Projects planned for 2016-17 include work along sections of Highway 103.

The development from Broad River to Port Joli in Queens and the Ingramport Interchange will continue.

The Nova Scotia government has also identified multiple sections of road for repaving.

They include a 10 kilometre stretch on Highway 103 from Exit 12 to the Northfield overpass and sections of the Sandy Point Road in Shelburne.

The plan also recognizes funding for the Shelburne, Milton and Martins Brook bridges.

The total highway capital budget for this year is $220-million.
