Over 108,000 People Set Foot on Bluenose II This Season

The sailing season is over for Bluenose II.

Bluenose II visited many ports including Boston, Pictou, Digby, Quebec City, Halifax and Sydney during the Canada 150 sailing season.

More than 108,000 passengers stepped foot on the vessel’s deck from June 10 to October 1, an increase of nearly 55,000 from last year.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was one of those who spent time aboard Bluenose II while in Quebec.

Captain Phil Watson says it was a memorable visit.

“Always a pleasure to have someone like that on board who represents our country and helps highlight the ship to a wider audience cause that’s a big deal for us.”

The ship was also part of the Rendez-Vous Tall Ships Regatta.

Watson says his job is equivalent to driving the American Statue of Liberty.

“I look at it that way. It’s a Canadian icon and there is a million owners and that’s the people of Nova Scotia. We try to represent the town, province and country as best we can.”

Bluenose II has been downrigged for the winter behind the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic in Lunenburg.
