Food banks in Nova Scotia could soon be getting more fresh fruits and vegetables.
A new tax credit has been put in place that will see farmers get a break for donating their surplus crops.
Wendy Sheppard, Chair of Lighthouse Food Bank in Chester says this is a good first step.
“We need more employment, we need better housing,” she says, “there’s all kinds of things that go along with it, but, I mean, nobody can do anything unless they’re fed and nourished.”
Sheppard says she’d like to see the province take a more active role in the fight against poverty.
However she’s hopeful the new credit will encourage more farmers to give their extra food instead of letting it go to waste.
