Schools Preparing For Spring Thaw – Operations Coordinator

A number of schools still have snow on their roofs from the harsh winter.

Maintenance staff have been working to clear roof drains in anticipation of the spring thaw.

Mild temperatures are expected on Wednesday – with a high of 6 degrees.

Coordinator of Operations with the South Shore Regional School Board, Andy Selig, says they’ve prepared for risks.

“Depending on how quick the thaw is or how slow the thaw is, it’s the amount of water that’s created from the snow melting and the big thing for us is to make sure it gets to the drains, to make sure the drains work as they are intended.”

Four different schools had minor leaks this winter including Bayview Community School, Chester Area Middle School, Bridgewater Elementary and South Queens Middle School.

Selig says this winter has been a good test on school roofs and their capabilities.
