UPDATE: Canadian Cancer Society Loses 310,000 Daffodils

The Canadian Cancer Society is starting to feel the loss of thousands of daffodils damaged in transit last month.

The flower fundraiser was expected to bring in more than $300,000.

National Vice President Barbara Stead-Coyle says so far they’ve only recovered about $60,000.

“$300,000 is roughly about half of what it costs us to run in any given year,” she says. “So, it certainly means we have to be really careful going forward with all of our other activities.”

Final numbers are expected to come back next month but Stead-Coyle says it won’t come close to what they were hoping to raise.

She says it’s made their plans for the year extra challenging.

“It’s significant for us. We’ve continued to ask Nova Scotians to donate to the Cancer Society to ensure we can continue to run all of our programs and services as scheduled.”

As of right now she says they have no plans to cut back on any programs.

Stead-Coyle says once they get the final numbers they’ll have to decide if another fundraiser will need to be organized.

She says they’re already working on a strategy to make sure something like this doesn’t happen again next year.
